This is a breakdown of the lines we both currently have, and those we have future plans on working with.

‘BLACK-EYED Demons’ LINE

Variety: Homozygous Black-Eyed Marten Spotted Tabby

Colors: Black, Russian Blue, Midnight Blue, Am Blue

Genetics: aa g* d* sd* c^mc^m BeBe StSt*

Namesakes: Pop Culture Demons

This line is all about a beautiful marbled look coming from the combination of both Marten and Spotted Tabby.  The black eyes are thanks to the BE Locus mutation which is dominant and allows the Marten gene to diverge from it’s usual trademark red eyes. These stunning rats sport mostly darker colors such as Black and Russian Blue, as they appear far better with the affects of both Marten and Spotted Tabby diluting the coat. Though I will be working some lighter blues and other dilutes in there at times.

Origins

This was actually one of my first lines, starting from Sablinova a Black-Eyed Russian Blue Marten from Pride Rock Rattery. She really was such a great foundation to this line, as she is homozygous for the Black-Eyed mutation and possibly as well Marten. From there one of her offspring was breed with Ritty, a Spotted Tabby from Tinker’s Rattery. I am unsure on Ritty’s true color base, she is either Russian Blue or Black but either way the resulting offspring will be crossed back to Sablinova, and hopefully we can get (and sucesfully pick out) a homozygous Black Eyed baby from that litter, as well Marten though that comes secondary in that situation. If we are lucky, the lines origins should be solidified by the 4th or 5th generation as far as the homozygous Black Eyed Marten Spotted Tabby. Then we can just focus on dilutes and experimenting with other colors.

Goals

  • Homozygous Marten
  • Homozygous Black-Eyed
  • Spotted tabby
  • Black, Russian Blue and Midnight Blue with possible Am Blue and Mink
  • Experiment with Chocolate, divergent line

Moving forward from here we are attempting to get the homozygous BE trait on a male and are waiting on a gen 3 littermate to breed back with her that has been already mixed with the Spotted Tabby gene as well. As it will be Sablinova’s third litter, it will also most likely be her last and so if we are lucky we can hopefully get a baby boy that is homozygous for both BE and Marten. Tabby is dominant, but I have heard from others it is actually Lethal Dominant so we most likely will not be aiming for homo Tabby of course if that is a true statement.

Black is already homozygous in the line as desired, and Russian Blue is introduced as well. I am not ready to add the Midnight Blue in quite yet, as I am still doing testing on the dilution, but it probably won’t be far off now. I plan on adding in Am Blue and Mink occasionally for other multi-spectrum dilutes as well testing if the colors can be worked in a viable way to actually create dynamic visibility.

There is another experiment which I wish to see out, and that is testing of the Chocolate mutation with Marten and Tabby genetics. I am not super hopeful due to the method at which Marten dilutes the coat, riding it of yellow and red pigments, so I don’t expect much success on that but possibly some with only the Spotted Tabby gene involved.

Currently

On generation 2, with the 3rd ready to be born any day. At this point we should be having Black Eyed Marten Spotted Tabby in at least Black that carries Russian Blue. In about a week or so we should really be able to tell more about where we stand with out 2nd generation of this line.

‘Red-EYED Devils’ LINE

Variety: Homozygous Marten

Colors: Black, Russian Blue, Midnight Blue, Am Blue

Genetics: aa g* d* sd* c^mc^m

Namesakes: Pop Culture Vampires

This is the other end of the Marten spectrum, and the more commonly breed Marten which matches the standard. Dark coats with the signature red eyes. Marten’s are among my favorite variety, and as a young kid I had always wanted a Black rat with the red eyes. Back then there was barely much in the way a variety that I knew of or the ease of access to such information about said varieties, but yesterdays dreams are todays reality as I strive to breed the darkest red-eyed rats possible. This line will feature everything that is dark, and even aim to extend that macabe appeal further with offshoot lines of Harley, Velveteen and possibly even Silvermane on occasion though the latter actually takes away from this lines glamour it could add some of it’s own.
